Master Rabbit Food Guide | What Can Rabbits Eat

Your master summary of veggies, herbs, flowers and treats

What belongs in your rabbit’s food bowl? This visual guide brings together the essentials—from hay and leafy greens to herbs, flowers and little rewards, including rabbit-friendly baked cookies.

Created by Cookie Yiyi of Oishi Bunnies, with Bunnini and Pee-Casso, it’s a practical starting point for bunny parents. For a closer look at individual foods, explore our detailed guides and Herbal Atlas.

Rabbit Food Guide at a Glance

A balanced rabbit menu starts with a dependable foundation, with variety added around it. Here’s how the main food groups fit together:

  • Hay and water: Keep unlimited grass hay and fresh drinking water available throughout the day. Hay should make up most of a healthy adult rabbit’s diet.
  • Leafy greens and herbs: Offer a varied selection of suitable greens, building on foods your rabbit already tolerates well.
  • Plain rabbit pellets: Serve measured portions appropriate to your rabbit’s size and needs. Pellets complement the menu; keep hay central.
  • Flowers and botanical forage: These add flavour, texture and foraging variety. Our Herbal Atlas provides detailed notes for individual botanicals.
  • Treats and rewards: Fruit and suitable baked cookies fit in small portions. Consider their ingredients and the total treats offered, including rewards during grooming or bonding.

This rabbit food guide gives you the overall picture. Young rabbits and those with medical conditions may need a different feeding plan, guided by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.

How to Use This Food List

Treat this list as a selection to explore. Your rabbit doesn’t need every item, and there’s no need to serve them all together. Start with familiar foods and use the list to find suitable additions over time.

Before offering a new plant, check its exact species, edible part and preparation. A familiar common name or illustration may not be enough to identify it correctly. Leaves, flowers, roots and seeds can have different feeding considerations.

Introduce one new food at a time in a small amount, then watch appetite, droppings and behaviour before increasing it. Follow our detailed food articles and Herbal Atlas for preparation, feeding notes and species-specific information. The infographic is a quick reminder to use alongside those guides.
